Day 15: Power View in Power BI – Filters, Interactions, and Visual Enhancements

On Day 15, we explore Power View features in Power BI, focusing on filters, slicers, and advanced visualization techniques to make reports more interactive and user-friendly.

1. Filters in Power BI

Filters allow you to control which data is displayed in your reports. Power BI provides three types of filters:

1.1 Visual Level Filter

  • Applies to a single visualization only.

  • Use it to restrict data in a specific chart or table without affecting others.

  • Example: Filtering a bar chart to show sales for a single region.

1.2 Page Level Filter

  • Applies to all visualizations on a page.

  • Use it when you want consistent filtering across multiple visuals on the same page.

  • Example: Showing only sales for 2025 across all charts on a page.

1.3 Report Level Filter

  • Applies to all pages and all visuals in the report.

  • Use it for global filtering across the entire report.

  • Example: Showing only active customers across all pages and visuals.

2. Edit Interactions

  • Edit Interactions allows you to control how slicers affect other visuals.

  • You can disable or enable interaction between slicers and specific charts, giving precise control over report behavior.

3. Custom Tooltip

  • Tooltips show additional information when hovering over a visual.

  • Custom tooltips allow you to display extra fields or measures to provide more context to your users.

4. Custom Visuals

  • Power BI supports custom visuals beyond the default set.

  • Use them to create specialized charts, KPI indicators, or interactive visuals that meet business requirements.

5. Sync Slicer

  • Sync Slicer allows a slicer to control multiple pages at the same time.

  • Useful for maintaining consistent filtering across a report.

6. Bookmarks

  • Bookmarks capture the current state of a report page, including filters, slicers, and visual selections.

  • Useful for storytelling, presentations, or saving different report views.

7. Drill Down

  • Drill Down allows exploring data hierarchies in visuals.

  • Example: Clicking on a Year to see Quarter, Month, or Day level details in a chart.

8. Drill Through

  • Drill Through enables users to navigate from one report page to a detailed page for a selected value.

  • Example: Clicking on a Region in a summary page to view detailed sales transactions for that region.

Power View features like filters, slicers, drill options, and bookmarks make Power BI reports dynamic, interactive, and user-friendly, allowing better insights and storytelling.
